2006 Treasure Hunt

Treasure Hunt 10th September 2006

Set by Last Year's Winner; Graham

General Rules

This year the results of the Treasure Hunt will be projected via our new digital projector instead of the normal slide projector. Those who only take slides are advised to approach members with scanners to have their work put onto disc or other storage medium ready for the digital projector. In order to achieve a ‘level playing field' for all competitors I do not want to see blatant manipulation of images projected. The morning section has been timed to allow approximately 30 minutes at each clue with motoring times well within speed limits in order to get to Lunch at 12-30 for 1-00pm serving.

Rover Image

The Rover image is required to be of a colourful, patterned, tiled roof.

Best Image

This should be any type of object not directly connected to any of the clues.

Gwen and I went round the clues several times, each time in very good weather, so we hope that this holds for our treasure hunt today.

CLUE 1 Having met at the gates car park to Hylands House our first point of call is nearby at the House itself. Apparently the part of the house we wish to see was originally erected some 20/30ft. away from the house to allow cover for the carriages occupants to alight in the dry. However today we have to picture it as it is from any angle!

CLUE 2 We next travel some 12 mile SE along the new A130 ( notorious , so please watch your speed) to a place whose name is a modern version of a surname, nothing to do with battles on bridges. A picture of a wooden erection in a bony road is required. Perhaps some clue time could be ‘shaved' for browsing at this area.

CLUE 3 Our journey resumes via A130 and A13 westward for about 11 miles to a rebellious leaders park to find a Museum of Motor Boating where a picture of ‘Pure Panic' is required. Those of us who are expert boatsmen might like to try their hand in the remote control boat pond!

CLUE 4 For our last clue before lunch we continue westward along the A13 for a further 10 miles before turning left on A1012. At the first roundabout turn right and after 1 mile right again onto the B186 heading north. Our destination is ‘Davey Down' in the Mardyke valley where today is ‘Open Day' in the old pumping station . Our picture is to be a close-up of a piece of machinery. The Warden/curators have been warned that we are coming and we may want to poke about in odd corners.

LUNCH TIME AT LAST!! Leaving Davey Down we head north for about 11 miles to Herongate (suggested route is B186 –A127—A128). After village entrance gates, take the 2 nd right turn, Rectory Lane, turn right after about 200yds and drive for 1mile to the The Olde Dog Inn. (tel 01277 810337)

After, hopefully, a very satisfactory lunch we are free from the restraints of timed deadlines and our time is our own generally. I will just mention the second ‘'Open Day' is at our last clue but our first three clues are all within the area of Brentwood High Street. This should give us the chance to walk off the effects of the lunch

CLUE 5 Please do your best to photograph Brentwood 's newest proud (??) possession, at the lower end of the High Street, a metallic tube showing a carved history of the town.

CLUE 6 The masonry remains of the temporary resting place of a famous religious man are in the centre of the town. Get the best picture of an archway within these ruins without the intrusion of modern architecture (?)

CLUE 7 Brentwood is well known for its grammar school and a picture of it's main front entrance with the clock tower above is now required.

CLUE 8 We now travel a short distance to the east, in the homeward direction for most of us, to another very prominent landmark in Mountnessing, the windmill. Depending upon the number of people visiting the mill it might be difficult to get but I want a detail picture of the sails and not the whole mill.
