2011 Treasure Hunt

Use your map to head for Waltham Abbey by whichever route you choose.

When you arrive, follow signs to Town Centre and you will arrive by the Church. You may be able to park in front of the church, but if not there is a sign opposite [by the public loos] to a short-stay car park.

Rover: a hanging basket
The more colourful the better!

The heart of this town is the Abbey Church of Holy Cross, rebuilt by King Harold, who was buried here after the Battle of Hastings. Within the church yard you will also find a tea room!

It is open on a Sunday.

Photo 1

Find the stone in the churchyard marking Harold’s burial place.

Can you take an interesting or evocative photo of this?
(A Fish Eye lens will score extra points!! This could help you to WIN!!!)

Photo 2

Much of the stained glass in the church was destroyed in WW2, but the Victorian wheel window survived, and this is perhaps worthy of photo No.2.

Photo 3

Near the church is the ruined gateway of the old Abbey with 2 archways, for pedestrians and wheeled vehicles.
This should be, taken from any angle.

Photo 4

Nearby also is the timber-framed Welsh Harp [or Harp] Inn dating from the 15th/16th century. Part of this building may once have been the priest’s house. Take any view that interests you, a feature of your choice will also do here.

Now leave Waltham Abbey via Epping and the B181 towards North Weald. Shortly after entering North Weald Bassett you will find your lunch stop at the Kings Head on your right.

AFTERNOON

After lunch:

Is any aspect of the 16th century pub in which you have had your lunch.

Then follow the B181 to join the A414 and head towards Chelmsford.

Soon you will come to a turn on your right to Greensted Green. Follow this to find the Saxon Church at Greensted.

The timber planks of this church date from about 1060. At the rear there is a so-called “leper’s squint”. This was thought to be a place where lepers, unable to enter the church, received blessings, but it is now believed to be a Holy water stoup.

Photo 6

Is any aspect of the church to show some of the original timbers.

Photo 7

Adjacent to the entrance is the grave of a 12th century Crusader. Extra marks for fine detail!!

Now, head back on the A414 towards Chelmsford. Before you reach Chelmsford, take a turning to your left to Writtle and find the village green and its pond.

This is a haven for ducks!
Find your last photo here among the ducks. A landscape or portrait view is fine but a close up like a head portrait will gain you extra marks! Catch lights in the eyes please!
